Time to make some noise for marriage equality

John Key's response to being questioned about his position on same-sex marriage? He's "not personally opposed" to it and that there is no "clamour" for it. DPF of course is disingenuously trying to spin this as support, but its a long way even from David Shearer's lukewarm statement. Sure, he's not opposed - but its not as if he's going to do anything to make it happen either. Its just not a priority for him (unlike, say, giving our assets to his rich mates). As Emma puts it One thing Key has admitted: there are no legitimate arguments against gay marriage. Just a lazy feckless governmen... Similar News >>

Obama's deceptions about federalism

I didn't really care all that much what President Obama said about gay marriage last week. I always assumed that he was for gay marriage just as he said in 1996 and that he was just pretending to be against it in 2004 and in his statements about "evolving." I don't see what there is to celebrate about his begrudging admitting that this was his real position last week when he still wasn't taking action to do anything about his views. But if gay rights activists are bought so easily by "just words," then I guess he can described as having done something historic. Otherwise, he appeased his b... Similar News >>

You may think you have a useful issue, and it is of some use, but here's the problem. Making same-sex marriage an important issue will give rise to the thought: If Obama loses, it will be because of the stand he took on same-sex marriage. That will cause some people – people in the middle who might go either way — to think: I don't want to be a part of sending the message that if you support same-sex marriage, you will lose. I'm going to vote for him, not because he did anything that significant in finally getting around to evolving into the position, but because, now that he has, I don't wan... Similar News >>

What We Learned: Obama Says 'I Do'

What we at The Hotline learned this week: -- President Obama's gay marriage reversal was an historic moment, but it was just that - a moment. Don't expect his embrace of a controversial social issue to actually move any votes this year. For one thing, the only segment of the Democratic base that disagrees on gay marriage - socially conservative African Americans - is the segment most likely to stick with Obama through thick and thin. -- On the other hand, even if the country itself is evenly divided overall, it hardly seems far-fetched to conclude that some down-ballot Democrats in red state...
